With project roadmaps, they can keep track of their multiple projects with ease.<\/p>\n<h3>Project Roadmap vs. Product Roadmap<\/h3>\n<p>A project roadmap isn&#8217;t the same as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmanager.com\/blog\/design-a-product-roadmap\">product roadmap<\/a>. Even though they\u2019re similar visual planning tools, product roadmaps have specific features that make them better suited for product development purposes. Project roadmaps are similar to product roadmaps, but they have slight differences. Here are some of the project management variables that need to be considered when creating one.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Project goals and objectives:<\/strong> The main thrust of any project roadmap is the high-level goals and objectives of the project. It&#8217;s important to make sure the roadmap aligns with these goals, but there&#8217;s no need to go into great detail as your project goals and objectives are explained in project documents such as the project plan or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmanager.com\/blog\/project-charter\">project charter<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Project risks:<\/strong> State the main project risks that could make your project fail or compromise major elements of the project plan like the scope, schedule, goals, stakeholder expectations, quality assurance, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Project schedule:\u00a0<\/strong>A project roadmap should have a visual <a href=\"\/guides\/project-scheduling\">project schedule<\/a> showing the project tasks&#8217; duration and due dates. The project roadmap must be visual and manageable in length so it can be easily digestible by all the stakeholders and team members involved in the <a href=\"\/blog\/project-definition\">project<\/a>. Most project managers use Gantt charts to create project roadmaps. Here\u2019s how.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Break Down Your Project Scope<\/h3>\n<p>Your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmanager.com\/blog\/project-scope\">project scope<\/a> is the sum of all your project tasks, or in other words, the work to be performed in a project. That\u2019s why defining your project scope is the first step when creating a project roadmap, as you\u2019ll need to know what project activities need to be done before drafting a project timeline. You can use a work breakdown structure to make sure you identify every task.<\/p>\n<p>When making a project roadmap, it&#8217;s also important to identify the deliverables that are expected from each project task and define quality standards and acceptance criteria for them.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Make a Project Schedule<\/h3>\n<p>Once you identify all your project tasks and estimate their duration, it\u2019s time to use ProjectManager\u2019s <a href=\"\/guides\/gantt-chart\">Gantt chart<\/a> to create a project schedule. Link Task Dependencies<\/h3>\n<p>Now that you have a basic project timeline showing project tasks, their due dates and duration, you need to identify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmanager.com\/training\/estimate-tasks-and-dependencies\">task dependencies<\/a> to ensure it will be accurate. Task dependencies determine the order in which tasks need to be executed. There are four types of task dependencies in project management.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Finish to start (FS):<\/strong> A task can\u2019t be started until its preceding dependent task has finished.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start to finish (SF):<\/strong> A task can\u2019t be finished until its preceding dependent task has been started.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finish to Finish (FF):<\/strong> A task can\u2019t finish until its preceding task has been completed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Start to start (SS):<\/strong> A task can\u2019t start until its preceding task begins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can imagine, task dependencies play a very significant role when making a project schedule, as one mistake can affect the overall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmanager.com\/guides\/project-timeline\">project timeline<\/a>. On the left side, there\u2019s a grid or table where the <a href=\"\/guides\/project-management\">project management<\/a> information can be entered and, on the right, there&#8217;s a project timeline that helps visualize the information from the grid.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><strong>Project phases: <\/strong><\/strong>The names, due dates and duration of project phases are shown on the left in bolded text. On the right side, they\u2019re shown as color-coded bars. For example, all the tasks in the \u201cContracts\u201d phase are blue, while tasks from the \u201cDesign\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmanager.com\/blog\/construction-phases\">project phase<\/a> are green.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tasks:<\/strong> The project roadmap grid breaks down project phases into tasks and allows project managers to track various details about them such as their priority level, estimated cost, status and deliverables. Then on the right, our timeline shows their due dates, duration, percentage of completion and assignee.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Task dependencies:<\/strong> The arrows on the roadmap timeline represent the dependencies among tasks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Project milestones:<\/strong> The diamond icons represent the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectmanager.com\/blog\/milestones-project-management\">project milestones<\/a> that, in this example, mark the end of each phase. However, any task can be converted into a milestone in this Gantt chart project roadmap.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key individuals:<\/strong> You can assign each task to the <a href=\"\/blog\/assemble-a-project-team\">project team<\/a> members who are responsible for them. It\u2019s important to enter their pay rate, skills and availability whenever they\u2019re added to the project roadmap so that this data is shown when assigning tasks. Other project stakeholders such as clients or contractors can be also invited into the project roadmap.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ProjectManager also offers a project portfolio management roadmap, which is very similar to the Gantt chart view, but the main difference is it can be used to track multiple projects.<\/p>\n<h3>Project Portfolio Management Roadmap Example<\/h3>\n<p>The project portfolio roadmap below shows a list of projects that an IT management consulting firm is executing for multiple clients.
